An honest message about Torah Live's future

Recently, a teacher told me he'd heard that password sharing is "a question of stealing."

I thought: It's not a question of stealing. It is stealing.

Not because we're trying to be rigid β€” but because every shared password means fewer resources to produce the Torah videos our children need and deserve.

Let me be honest with you. Torah Live has the potential to be financially self-sustaining. The user base is large enough. The demand is enormous. The mission is too important.

But that's not our reality β€” yet.

Right now, I'm on the road fundraising each month instead of creating new courses. And the irony? The number one complaint I hear is: "There aren't enough videos!" You deserve more content β€” and we can only deliver if everyone who uses Torah Live pays their fair share.

Starting January 20th, each paid account will stay logged in on one device at a time. If you sign in on a second device, you'll be able to pause the first and make the switch.

We're also making sign-in simpler and more secure. Instead of passwords, you'll receive a 6-digit code sent directly to your email or phone each time you log in. No more forgotten passwords β€” just quick, easy access.

I know this may cause some inconvenience, and I'm sorry for that. But this step is essential to protect Torah Live's mission. πŸ˜”

Here's the good news: because your subscription helps us inspire hundreds of thousands of Jews worldwide, you can count your Torah Live payment as ma'aser.

And to make it easier to spread the word, we're offering a referral benefit: you get $10 for every person you bring in, and your friend gets 10% off. πŸŽ‰

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use my account both at home and at school?

Yes! As long as you're the only one using the account, you can use it wherever you teach or learn β€” at home with your family or in the classroom with your students.

This policy is about preventing password sharing, not restricting where you personally use it.

I only use Torah Live sometimes. Can I share my password with another teacher?

No.

We get it β€” occasional users sometimes feel their usage doesn't justify a full subscription. But every platform must choose a pricing model, and ours (per teacher) is the simplest and fairest way to sustain the production of new Torah content.

That means even occasional users need their own account. And remember: you can use your ma'aser money, since your subscription helps spread Torah to hundreds of thousands worldwide.

How does the new login system work?

Starting January 20th, we're switching to a more secure login method. Instead of entering a password, you'll receive a 6-digit code sent to your email address or a 4-digit code sent to your phone by SMS. Simply enter that code to sign in β€” it's that simple!

This change makes your account more secure and eliminates the hassle of remembering (or resetting) passwords.

Do I still need a password for the Torah Live app?

Yes, temporarily. While the website now uses the 6-digit code system, the app still requires a password for now.

You can set or update your app password here:

We're working to bring the easier code-based login to the app soon!

Does a Premium account allow me to share my password?

No. Premium unlocks additional content, not additional users. All accounts β€” Value or Premium β€” are licensed to one individual user.

I substitute in various classes throughout the school. Do I need one account or multiple accounts?

Just one.

As long as it's you teaching the class, your single teacher license covers all your substitute classrooms. The guiding principle remains: one account per educator.

We have two teachers who want to use one account. They won't be using Torah Live at the same time. Can they share?

No.

Even if the usage isn't simultaneous, an account is licensed for one educator only. Two teachers require two accounts. This is essential for both halachic integrity and financial sustainability.

Do I get reward for teaching Torah if I'm using a "borrowed" account?

This is an important spiritual question.

Chazal teach that benefiting improperly can taint a blessing (Berachos 35b), and that a mitzvah built on wrongdoing loses its standing (Sukkah 30a). The Rambam and Rabbeinu Yonah explain that a mitzvah cannot rest on a foundation of dishonesty.

We're not equating password sharing with major theft β€” but it is benefiting from something not rightfully yours, and it deprives Torah Live of the means to produce more Torah.

Does a person still get reward? Only Hashem decides. But for the fullest zechus, the cleanest brachah, and the most honest support of Torah: use your own account.

Can my spouse and children use my account?

If you have a family subscription, yes. Your immediate household can use it, one device at a time. Extended family, neighbors, or friends cannot.

Our rule is simple: anyone in the house β€” under the same roof!

Can my students use their student sub-profiles at home to watch Torah Live?

No.

Student sub-profiles are designed exclusively for classroom use under the teacher's supervision. If a child wants to watch Torah Live at home, they need their own personal home account.

My school wants a discounted package. What options are available?

We offer discounts for schools purchasing 10 or more teacher licenses.

We also have options that don't take a penny out of the tight school budget:

School sponsorships: A parent or grandparent can sponsor the entire school's access. They donate to Torah Live (a registered 501c3) and receive the honor of sponsoring an asset on our site. As a thank-you for making the intro, your school gets annual school-wide and parent-wide access. Email us at sponsorthefuture@torahlive.com for details.

Teacher programs: The parent body can join together to cover teacher accounts. We provide ready-to-send text for your parent community β€” just email us at the address above to get the template.

Each teacher receives their own login, ensuring proper use and smooth classroom management.

Can I pay for Torah Live using ma'aser money?

Yes!

Because your subscription directly helps spread Torah to Jews worldwide, many poskim allow it to be counted as ma'aser. Your subscription is both a purchase and a form of Torah-supporting tzedakah.

How else can I help Torah Live grow?

  • You receive $10 for every person who subscribes through your referral

  • Your friend gets 10% off their first year

It's a meaningful way to grow Torah Live and expand Torah learning worldwide.
